Former FC Barcelona midfielder Andrés Iniesta has advised his former club to pursue the signing of **Victor Osimhen>, describing the Super Eagles striker as the ideal long-term replacement for veteran forward Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona are in the market for a new centre-forward following Lewandowski’s move to Chicago Fire FC earlier this summer.
The Catalan giants had previously identified Osimhen and Julián Álvarez as potential reinforcements but were reportedly discouraged from pursuing the Nigerian international because of the financial demands associated with a transfer, including his valuation and salary expectations.
Speaking to Turkish broadcaster NTV Spor, Iniesta said Barcelona should resist the temptation to deploy teenage sensation Lamine Yamal as a central striker, despite the youngster’s exceptional talent.
Instead, the World Cup-winning midfielder urged Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, to strengthen the attack by bringing in an established goalscorer.
“Lamine Yamal is a fantastic player, but I wouldn’t prefer him playing as a number nine. If Ferran Torres leaves, I would strongly advise Deco to sign a striker,” Iniesta said.
“I don’t think Atletico Madrid will let Julian Alvarez go. I would suggest they sign Victor Osimhen. He’s a fantastic goalscorer and one of the best replacements for Robert Lewandowski.”
Osimhen remains one of Europe’s most highly rated strikers after another impressive season in front of goal, with his consistent performances continuing to attract interest from several top clubs across the continent.
Although Barcelona are believed to have cooled their pursuit due to financial constraints, Iniesta believes the Nigerian forward possesses the qualities required to spearhead the club’s attack for years to come.
Meanwhile, Turkish champions Galatasaray S.K., who were previously reported to be open to selling the 27-year-old, are now understood to be considering keeping the prolific striker rather than approving a transfer.
Osimhen’s future remains one of the major talking points of the European transfer window, with several elite clubs continuing to monitor his situation ahead of the new season.
