Injury Ends Victor Boniface’s Season at Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen have confirmed that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface will not play again before the end of the season, bringing an early close to a challenging loan spell for the forward.

The 25-year-old, who joined the German side last summer from Bayer Leverkusen, has been out of action since December after suffering a knee injury during training. He subsequently underwent surgery in January in Innsbruck, where the procedure was handled by renowned orthopaedic specialist Christian Fink.

Although Boniface has recently returned to light training as part of his recovery, club officials say a return to competitive action this season is no longer being considered.

Club Provides Recovery Update

Sporting director Peter Niemeyer shared the latest assessment in an interview with German publication DeichStube.

“He is finishing his rehabilitation in Leverkusen, and we are pleased with every bit of progress. But it is still impossible to predict when he will be fully fit again,” Niemeyer explained.

The update effectively rules out any late push to reintegrate the striker into Bremen’s squad during the closing stages of the campaign.

Signs of Progress Amid Frustration

Despite the setback, Boniface has shown encouraging signs in his rehabilitation. Earlier this week, he posted a short workout video on social media showing himself performing leg exercises in the gym, accompanied by a light-hearted caption expressing determination to return.

Supporters quickly flooded the post with messages of encouragement, reflecting the goodwill the Nigerian international continues to enjoy despite his limited time on the pitch.

Stop-Start Spell in Germany

Boniface’s stint at Bremen was hampered by injuries and interruptions. He made 11 Bundesliga appearances, contributing two assists but failing to score numbers that now represent his full output for the club this season.

The latest injury adds to a difficult stretch in the striker’s career. He previously missed the Africa Cup of Nations due to fitness issues and was also unavailable for Bremen’s January 2026 league clash against Borussia Dortmund as recovery complications persisted.

Emotional Toll of Long Layoff

Away from football, Boniface has spoken openly about the psychological strain of his extended absence. In one rehabilitation-era post, he admitted to “putting on a fake smile for over a year,” while expressing faith and resilience as he works toward full recovery.

For now, both player and club are focused on long-term fitness rather than rushing a comeback, with hopes that a fully recovered Boniface can restart his momentum next season potentially reclaiming a role with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
