Just In: INEC Declares PDP Winner Of Gwagwalada Area Council Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced Mohammed Kasim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the results declared by the Returning Officer, the PDP candidate polled a total of 22,165 votes to defeat his challengers, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, who got a total of 17,788 votes.

Below is the breakdown of results:

PDP: 22,165 votes

APC: 17,788 votes

APGA: 1,687 votes

ADC: 1,336 votes

Recall that residents of the FCT on Saturday, voted for six Area Council Chairmen of Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali, and Councillors of 62 Wards.

Meanwhile, former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has submitted that the ongoing Ramadan fast contributed to the low voter turnout for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections and the by-elections in Rivers and Kano states.

He explained that most muslims observe reduced physical movement during fasting hours and increased focus on spiritual commitments, hence the low turnout in several polling units on Saturday, 21st February, elections.

Based on the submission, Ahmad reiterated the call for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adjust the 2027 general election timetable, which currently falls during the Ramadan fasting period.
