The lawmaker representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, has officially defected to the Labour Party Nigeria, days after resigning from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Ikwechegh, popularly known as Onyeocha N’Aba, confirmed his move after a closed-door meeting with Alex Otti on Tuesday, March 3, in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.
Speaking shortly after the meeting, the federal lawmaker disclosed that he had formally received his Labour Party membership card, signalling his full integration into the party.
“Well, I visited the governor this evening to receive his blessings. As you may or may not know, I have received my Labour Party card as a new member of the party,” Ikwechegh stated.
Why He Defected
According to him, his decision to leave APGA was driven by his conviction that the Labour Party aligns more closely with his political beliefs and long-term vision for governance.
He also cited what he described as visible transformation and infrastructural progress under Governor Otti’s leadership in Abia State as a motivating factor behind his decision.
Dismisses APC Speculation
Ikwechegh further dismissed speculations that he might be heading to the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly following his recent meeting with Bola Tinubu.
He clarified that his engagement with the President should not be misinterpreted as a sign of political realignment, reaffirming his commitment to the Labour Party.
The lawmaker also commended the party’s leadership, including Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha, for what he described as their dedication to strengthening the party’s structure.
A Call for Issue-Based Politics
Ikwechegh stressed that politics should not be driven by intimidation or personal ambition but should focus on service delivery and national development.
He maintained that his move is aimed at better serving his constituents in Aba North and Aba South, while contributing meaningfully to the growth of Abia State and Nigeria at large.
His defection marks another significant shift in Abia’s political landscape as alignments continue to evolve ahead of future electoral contests.
