A Nigerian man has sparked conversations on social media after sharing how a stranger returned ₦1.8 million that was mistakenly transferred to the wrong OPay account.
The man, identified on X as @bod_republic, said he quickly contacted the recipient after discovering the error, but the phone number was initially unreachable.
According to him, the number became reachable about 30 minutes later, and he pleaded with the recipient to return the money. He also offered to reward the person with ₦100,000 if the funds were refunded.
However, in a surprising turn of events, the recipient returned the entire ₦1.8 million.
Impressed by the individual’s honesty, @bod_republic said he eventually sent the person ₦150,000 as a token of appreciation.
The story has since gone viral on X, with many users sharing their thoughts and recounting similar experiences involving money mistakenly transferred to their accounts.
One user, Farm Aggregate, questioned the assumption that people who receive money in error are always financially disadvantaged.
“What if the person is even richer? Why do people always think when these things happen, it’s always the poor or the needy that is the recipient?”
Another user, Echan, recalled returning ₦204,000 that was mistakenly sent to his account.
“Someone mistakenly sent me 204k. When I sent it back, I was the one that called her to confirm if she had seen her money back.”
Another commenter praised the recipient’s integrity, writing: “He returned every naira, then got rewarded for it. Good man.”
The incident has continued to generate reactions, with many Nigerians commending the recipient for his honesty and describing the outcome as a rare act of integrity.
