Online Media Professionals (OPM), a new association established to unite online media practitioners, protect their professional interests and promote responsible journalism, has been formed in Enugu State.
The association, which announced its emergence in a communiqué dated October 25, 2026, aims to provide a common platform for online media professionals to collaborate, address shared challenges and strengthen their influence in Nigeria’s media industry.
According to the communiqué, OPM was established in response to the growing importance of online publications in informing the public, shaping national conversations and holding public officeholders accountable.
The association noted that closer cooperation among practitioners would enable them to address common professional challenges, share ideas and protect their collective interests through a recognised platform.
OPM is expected to bring together individuals who own or work with online media publications, creating opportunities for professional development, collaboration and engagement with relevant stakeholders.
The association also plans to establish relationships with government officials, security agencies, educational institutions, corporate organisations and other institutions whose activities affect the media industry and the wider society.
According to the communiqué, such engagements would promote dialogue, encourage collaboration and improve understanding of the contributions of online media practitioners to national development.
OPM Begins Operations in South-East
The association disclosed that its activities would initially focus on the South-East, with plans to expand its reach and establish a national presence across Nigeria.
Its long-term objective is to build a credible professional organisation capable of providing a common voice for online media practitioners, promoting responsible journalism and addressing issues affecting members’ welfare and professional activities.
OPM also emphasised the importance of professionalism, accountability and respect for the responsibilities associated with informing the public.
It stated that the growth of online media should be accompanied by standards that promote ethical conduct and strengthen public confidence in online publications.
The association further acknowledged that achieving its objectives would require members’ commitment, a clear sense of purpose and programmes designed to address their needs.
Membership Open to Online Media Practitioners
OPM announced that membership would be open to professionals who own or work with online media publication platforms and are willing to support the association’s objectives.
It called on online media practitioners across the South-East and other parts of the country to identify with the initiative and participate in building a stronger professional body.
The association described its formation as the beginning of a collective effort to strengthen the professional identity of online media practitioners, improve cooperation and create opportunities for growth within the industry.
The communiqué was signed by Jude Chinedu and Chukwumerije Aja on behalf of the Communiqué Drafting Committee of Online Media Professionals (OPM).
