Oyo Police Bust Transnational Ammunition Trafficking Ring, Arrest Two, Recover 2,625 Cartridges Hidden in Jerry Cans

The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against illegal arms trafficking after operatives of the Oyo State Command dismantled a transnational ammunition smuggling network and arrested two suspects in Saki.

The suspects were apprehended at Budo Mosalasi in Saki during what authorities described as a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation targeting the proliferation of illegal weapons.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, the arrested men identified as Isiaka Dare, 35, and Taiwo Ayodabo, 33, both from Tede are believed to be part of a cross-border syndicate that trafficked ammunition into Nigeria through unauthorized routes from the Benin Republic.

Massive Ammunition Seizure

Police operatives reportedly recovered a large cache of ammunition concealed in unusual containers to evade detection.
Items seized include:

  • 105 packets of pump-action cartridges,
  • Each packet containing 25 cartridges, bringing the total to 2,625 cartridges,
  • Ammunition hidden inside four jerry cans to disguise the shipment,
  • Two unregistered motorcycles allegedly used for transportation and distribution.

Authorities believe the ammunition was intended for supply to unauthorized individuals and criminal groups, potentially fueling armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes.

Intelligence-Led Crackdown

Investigators say preliminary findings indicate the suspects operated an organized smuggling route spanning international borders, facilitating the clandestine importation and circulation of prohibited ammunition within Nigeria.

Police added that the arrested men are cooperating with investigators to expose other members of the network and trace the supply chain behind the illegal trade.

Commissioner Orders Prosecution

The Commissioner of Police in the state has directed that the suspects be formally charged in court once investigations are concluded. He commended the оперативes involved, stressing that proactive policing and actionable intelligence remain vital in dismantling organized criminal enterprises.

Call for Public Cooperation

The Command also acknowledged the role of residents whose information contributed to the successful operation, emphasizing that community partnership is essential to combating insecurity.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and continue sharing credible intelligence, as authorities intensify efforts to curb the spread of illegal arms and prevent the state from becoming a hub for criminal activity.
