Investigative journalist David Hundeyin has accused activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore of leading a US-funded operation aimed at undermining genuine social and political movements in Nigeria.
Hundeyin claims that Sowore’s so-called “revolution” is more about optics than actual change, co-opting the language of activism while preventing real public mobilization.
In a post on X formerly Twitter, Hundeyin said Sowore’s activities, allegedly financed by organizations such as the Omidyar Network, Ford Foundation, and MacArthur Foundation, “pollute the very word ‘revolution’ in Nigeria.”
He argued that Sowore’s orange-clad followers and online campaigns make genuine movements appear frivolous, causing public disengagement.
Hundeyin added that at the first sign of civil disobedience or protests, Sowore and his supporters insert themselves to control narratives, distribute flyers, and fix protest dates and venues effectively killing the momentum of authentic grassroots movements.
He further noted that Nigeria, despite being Africa’s most populous country, lacks any significant socialist or leftist party, a void he attributes in part to Sowore’s decades-long operations that co-opt revolutionary ideals for personal and foreign agendas.
“Once again, I cannot stress this enough,” Hundeyin wrote. “The US establishment does not give people millions of dollars for free. If someone’s 7-figure USD cheques are signed by Omidyar Network, Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, and other US secret intelligence front entities, that person works for the US government. Omoyele Sowore’s job is to PREVENT revolution, not to contribute to one!”
Sowore has not responded to Hundeyin’s allegations.
