United States President Donald Trump has reacted to his Republican Party’s setback in Tuesday’s midterm elections after the Democratic Party secured victory and took control of the Senate.
Fox News reported on Wednesday that Trump acknowledged the Democrats’ electoral performance and congratulated the party on its achievement.
Gists9ja reports that the Democrats gained seven additional seats, increasing their representation in the US Senate to 53 and securing control of the chamber, while Republicans were left with 47 seats.
Reacting to the outcome, Trump observed that Democrats had spent 11 years seeking such a victory before finally achieving their objective.
However, he dismissed suggestions that the election results amounted to a loss of confidence in his presidency or an outright rejection of his administration.
“Congratulations to the Democrats. They did a good job. They’ve been looking for this one for 11 years, and they finally got it. But I don’t view it as a hit on me,” Fox News quoted Trump as saying.
The Republican Party’s electoral setback comes amid growing criticism of several policies and developments under Trump’s administration.
Among the issues attracting public criticism are rising fuel prices in the United States, partly linked to the conflict involving Iran, the administration’s immigration enforcement policies and its extensive trade tariffs.
Available figures indicated that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained approximately 51,000 people in August.
Meanwhile, petrol prices reportedly rose to an average of between $4.33 and $4.36 per gallon in September 2026.
The Trump administration also implemented 50 separate tariff and trade policy measures across 2025 and 2026, with the measures affecting more than half of all imports into the United States.
