With Cement At ₦1.2m Per 100 Bags Under Tinubu, Many Nigerians May Never Own Homes — Commentator

A social commentator has sparked conversations online after lamenting the rising cost of building materials in Nigeria and the growing difficulty many citizens face in achieving home ownership.

According to the commentator, the worsening economic situation under the administration of Bola Tinubu has made building a personal house increasingly unrealistic for many low and middle-income Nigerians.

He pointed to the sharp rise in cement prices, noting that five bags of cement now cost around ₦60,000, meaning that purchasing 100 bags would require approximately ₦1.2 million.

The commentator argued that the continuous increase in the prices of cement and other construction materials has placed enormous pressure on Nigerians already struggling with inflation, reduced purchasing power, and the high cost of living.

According to him, many citizens who once hoped to build modest homes through years of hard work and savings are now watching those dreams gradually slip away.

“5 bags of cement is ₦60,000. This means to purchase 100 bags of cement, you’ll need ₦1,200,000. A fair percentage of Nigerians in this generation might not build their own houses before they die and that’s not a curse,” he stated.

The remarks have since generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians sharing similar frustrations over the soaring prices of building materials, rent, food, transportation, and other essential needs.

Some users blamed inflation and the depreciation of the naira for the rising costs, while others argued that the economic hardship has made long-term financial goals increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens to achieve.
