Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said his relationship with Peter Obi remains strong despite the two politicians now belonging to different political parties.
Baba-Ahmed made the disclosure during an appearance on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, where he described the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate as his “boss”.
The former Labour Party chieftain stressed that their political differences have not affected their personal relationship, adding that he remains close enough to Obi to contact him directly whenever necessary.
Baba-Ahmed said he could have offered assistance to Obi during the recent incident in Benue State if the former Anambra State governor had reached out to him.
He said:
“In reality, if you check what is between me and Peter Obi, and coming to the clarifications now, let me tell you: first and foremost, Obi is my boss. I still call him my boss.”
Baba-Ahmed further explained that he still maintains direct communication with Obi and could reach him by phone without difficulty.
According to him, Obi would likely answer his call within a few rings, describing the relationship between them as cordial despite their political separation.
He said:
“If not because I don’t like acting, I could call Peter Obi now and on the second or third ring, he will answer. Hey, my brother Datti.”
Datti Speaks On Benue Incident
The former vice-presidential candidate also referenced the recent incident involving Obi during his visit to Benue State.
Obi had travelled to the state as part of a humanitarian visit and was reportedly attempting to proceed to Yelwata when his convoy was blocked by youths in the Makurdi area.
Speaking about the incident, Baba-Ahmed suggested that Obi could have contacted him for assistance.
He imagined what such a conversation could have sounded like, saying:
“Sir, what happened in Benue? Why didn’t you call me in Benue?”
Baba-Ahmed maintained that Obi was aware of his ability and willingness to assist him if he had been contacted.
He added:
“He knows I could have helped out in Benue, even where he is now. He knows I could have helped out in Benue. My relationship with Peter is solid.”
His comments come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with former political allies now belonging to different parties while maintaining personal relationships outside party structures.
