The General Overseer of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, has accused the music industry of exploiting the church for decades.
In a viral sermon, he lamented that many musicians started their careers in the church but later abandoned their Christian roots for secular fame and financial gain.
Oyakhilome argued that these individuals fail to give back to the Christian ministry, instead using the church as a stepping stone to achieve personal success. He expressed concern that after exposure to worldly influences, some return to the church with behaviors and mindsets that negatively impact the faith community.
Warning to Pastors
The renowned preacher cautioned church leaders against entrusting the ministry of music to individuals who may have self-serving motives rather than genuine spiritual dedication. He emphasized that over the past 40 to 50 years, no industry has taken advantage of the church as much as the music industry.
“If you look at history, even beyond the past 50 years, you will see many worldly singers who started in the church. They were in the choir, leading praise, but eventually turned to secular music. All they did was use the church to gain popularity and financial benefits.”
Oyakhilome further alleged that some of these musicians, after gaining recognition, start their own churches or find ways to capitalize on their church connections for monetary reasons. He attributed their shift to external influences, which he believes corrupt their intentions and lead them astray.
“Satan enters into their minds, giving them ideas on how to leverage their position in the house of God for financial gain. Once they step outside, they absorb a different spirit and bring it back into the church, influencing others in the wrong way.”
Call for Stricter Church Policies
Reiterating the importance of protecting the integrity of the church, Oyakhilome urged pastors to be discerning in assigning musical responsibilities.
“As I observe churches today, I urge pastors not to entrust this all-important aspect of ministry to individuals who seek only personal gain rather than true spiritual service.”
His remarks have sparked discussions within Christian circles, with many debating the role of the church in shaping musicians and whether stricter policies should be enforced to prevent exploitation.
