The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State chapter, has announced a three-day fasting and prayer programme for the safe return of abducted teachers and pupils in the state.
The union said the spiritual exercise replaced an earlier plan to stage a mass protest over growing insecurity and attacks affecting schools and communities across Oyo State.
According to a statement signed by the union’s secretary, Comrade Salami B. Olukayode, the decision followed consultations with stakeholders in the education sector.
The NUT explained that the fasting and prayer programme is aimed at seeking divine intervention for the release of the abducted victims, while also praying for improved security across schools and local communities in the state.
The union noted that the safety and wellbeing of teachers, pupils and education workers remain a top priority amid increasing concerns over insecurity in some parts of Oyo State.
Although the union stepped back from plans for a public protest, it stressed that it would continue to push for stronger security measures to protect schools and ensure a safer learning environment.
The development comes as fears continue to grow over rising cases of kidnappings and attacks targeting schools, teachers and rural communities in different parts of Nigeria.
Residents and stakeholders have continued to call on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts toward rescuing abducted victims and preventing further attacks on educational institutions.
