A woman from Ihunowere in Enugu State was publicly paraded by members of her community after she allegedly took her married daughter to terminate a pregnancy.
Videos circulating online showed the woman wearing palm fronds around her waist while holding a gong as she moved around the community making public declarations about the incident.
Her daughter was also seen walking beside her during the procession, while residents reportedly reacted with shock, shouting and condemning the act as the pair moved through the area.
According to reports shared by local sources, the controversy allegedly began after the woman became upset with her son-in-law over his inability to provide food items and gifts to her family during festive periods.
It was gathered that the daughter got married last year, but tensions reportedly developed after her husband allegedly failed to send gifts to the wife’s family during Christmas celebrations and later during Easter.
When confronted, the man reportedly explained that he was facing financial difficulties and could not afford the customary support expected by the family at the time.
Following the disagreement, the woman allegedly asked her married daughter to return to her family home. Reports claim that the daughter arrived while pregnant and was later allegedly taken by her mother to terminate the pregnancy.
During the public parade organised by youths of the community, the woman reportedly admitted to the allegation while addressing residents.
Local radio platform Tower FM Nsukka reportedly stated that community leaders directed the woman to pay ₦1 million compensation to the son-in-law over the incident.
The report also claimed she was instructed to perform traditional funeral rites for the aborted pregnancy in line with customs observed by the community.
The incident has since generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating issues surrounding cultural practices, family interference in marriages, women’s rights and the use of public humiliation as a form of punishment.
