Tinubu Speaks On Changing Nigeria’s Name, Abolishing Sharia Law

President Bola Tinubu has dismissed rumours claiming that his administration plans to change the name of Nigeria or abolish sharia law in the northern part of the country.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the presidency, reports circulating on social media suggesting that the Federal Government intends to rename the country are false and misleading.

The statement also rejected claims that the Tinubu administration was considering the abolition of sharia law in northern Nigeria.

The presidency described the rumours as baseless speculation aimed at creating unnecessary tension and confusion among Nigerians.

It urged members of the public to disregard the reports and rely only on official government communications for accurate information regarding national policies and constitutional matters.

The clarification comes amid increasing circulation of unverified political claims and misinformation on social media platforms concerning the policies of the current administration.

Sharia law remains operational in several northern states within the framework allowed by Nigeria’s constitution, particularly in matters relating to personal and civil issues among Muslims.
