Messi’s absence raised questions, as neither the footballer nor a representative was present to accept the award. In response, a statement was issued on Messi’s behalf, explaining the situation.
“The White House informed FIFA, which then notified the club at the end of December about Leo being selected for this honor,” the statement read. “Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House expressing his deep gratitude for the recognition. While he feels immensely honored, Messi explained that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments, he would be unable to attend. He thanked the White House for the gesture and expressed hope for a future opportunity to meet in person.”
