A northern Islamic cleric, Mallam Saleh Muhammad Jimeta, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his recent remarks comparing himself to Prophet Moses and Nigeria to Egypt.
Jimeta, who spoke in Hausa, expressed his anger during a Friday Khutbah, or Islamic sermon, delivered to his congregation. A video of the sermon was circulating widely on Facebook on Sunday.
The cleric described the President’s reported comparison as offensive to Islam, arguing that Tinubu should not compare himself to Prophet Moses, whom Muslims regard as a Prophet of Allah.
According to Jimeta, Nigeria’s current situation should also not be compared to Egypt in the context in which the President reportedly made the remarks.
“May Allah curse him. How can Tinubu compare himself to Moses? Moses was a Prophet. Who is Tinubu to compare himself to Moses? This is an insult to Islam,” the cleric said in the video.
Jimeta also called on Nigerians to pray against the Tinubu administration, accusing the government of failing to adequately address the economic hardship facing many citizens.
He further alleged that the President’s comments were inappropriate and insensitive amid the country’s current challenges.
The video has since generated widespread reactions on social media, with Nigerians expressing divided opinions. While some condemned the cleric for invoking curses against the President, others supported his criticism of Tinubu’s reported remarks.
The controversy continues to generate discussion online as Nigerians debate the limits of religious criticism and political commentary.
