Emergency responders were deployed to the scene of a plane crash in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the crash occurred near Military Trail, between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North.
Authorities subsequently shut down all northbound and southbound lanes of Military Trail and advised motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes until further notice.
Videos circulating online appeared to show the aircraft making a sharp turn before plunging towards the ground near a mobile home park, triggering a massive fireball and destroying at least one trailer.
Flight-tracking information from ADS-B Exchange indicated that the aircraft descended approximately 27,000 feet within one minute before its tracking data was lost.
Although there were reports of several fatalities, authorities had yet to confirm the number of people killed. It was also unclear whether anyone on the ground was injured or killed in the incident.
The aircraft was identified as a Learjet 60, which had reportedly departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
The Learjet 60 is a business jet manufactured by Bombardier Aerospace and is typically configured to carry six or seven passengers in addition to a two-person crew.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
