Popular Nigerian singer Timaya has once again stirred debate online after speaking out against the idea of marriage.
The music star, whose real name is Inetimi Timaya Odon, shared his views while spending time with fellow musicians Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, and Phyno. In a video that has since gone viral on social media, Timaya advised young men to focus on having children rather than getting married, claiming that marriage does not always work.
Speaking casually during the conversation, the singer said in pidgin English that men should simply have children and allow them to grow, rather than worry about marriage.
“Just born pikin, the pikin go grow. This marriage thing no dey work,” he said in the clip that quickly sparked reactions online.
Timaya’s comments have generated mixed responses from fans, with some agreeing with his perspective while others criticized the remark and defended the importance of marriage and family stability.
This is not the first time the ‘Dem Mama’ crooner has expressed doubts about marriage. Back in June 2022, he suggested that he might never tie the knot. In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account at the time, Timaya referenced Jesus Christ, noting that Jesus never married and adding that he sees himself as “Christ-like,” implying he might also remain unmarried.
Despite his stance on marriage, the singer is a father of four children, whom he shares with three different women.
Timaya’s remarks have once again fueled conversations on social media about modern relationships, parenting, and the changing views of marriage among celebrities and young people.
